Climate Change and Dynamics of Permafrost Environments
PUBLICATIONS :: PAST PROJECTS :: CURRENT PROJECTS BELOW
Research on the impacts of climate change in permafrost environments to better understand their dynamics has been my main research topic for about 20 years. Within this broad field, I would organize my research in 4 areas: i. Antarctic terrestrial environments, ii. Permafrost thermal state, iii. Arctic coastal change and iv. Permafrost thaw lakes. I have started working in this theme in 2000 when I first participated in an expedition to Antarctica, but since then have been conducted in several projects, including Svalbard, Nortern Quebec, Beaufort Sea coast and also the High Atlas mountains. I have participated in 13 expeditions to Antarctica and 9 to the Arctic. Currently, I am coordinating or co-coordinating two projects: Thawimpact in Antarctica and Permamerc in the Arctic, but I am still wrapping-up results from the projects Nunataryuk and EO4PAC that ended in 2023. I am also coordinating the PERMANTAR network of permafrost observatories in Western Antarctic Peninsula.

Reconstructing Past Cold Environments
Although without current project funding, I am conducting research on the reconstruction of the Serra da Estrela glaciation chronology, with several samples on the pipeline for dating. I collaborate with the Estrela UNESCO Global Geopark to disseminate knowledge on the Estrela glacial and periglacial environments and to promote environmental awareness and protection. I was scientific coordinator of the Estrela UNESCO Global Geopark from the preparation of the application in 2016 to 2023. I am honored and proud to have been in the grassroots of that amazing project which is now in full speed.

Contemporary Geomorphological Dynamics of Mountains and Coasts
My background is on geomorphology and the geomorphodynamics of mountain and coastal environments are topics very keen to me. As such, I have been involved in different projects or promoting research with my students that aim at digging into these topics. Being a detailed geomorphological mapping and remote sensing enthusiast, and very interested in drone usage since 2011 when we first used one in Svalbard, I have been applying these techniques to better understand spatial dynamics at amazing spatial resolution.
